Small scale solar irrigation

Small scale solar irrigation

Agriculture is the backbone of Rwanda’s economy and key to the country’s growth and poverty reduction strategy. However, dependence on rains and a lack of irrigation are holding back productivity and affecting food security.

With funding from the OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID), we are working with smallholder farmers (groups and cooperatives) to develop the solar irrigation market in Rwanda. Through a mix of loans and subsidies we help farmers to buy solar irrigation systems from accredited suppliers. Some cooperatives are aready seeing their yields increase by 25% over the previous year.

We are also setting up demonstration farms throughout the country to raise awareness of technologies and products to develop markets and build demand.
