Crowdfunding to increase the availability of affordable biogas

1/12/2016

SimGas Kenya, a triple bottom line company that designs, produces and installs biogas systems for smallholder farmers in East-Africa, has launched a crowdfunding campaign in a bid to expand access to clean, affordable and high quality energy and sanitation solutions.

SimGas’ biogas systems are modular, domestic systems that enable rural households with livestock to use the manure to generate clean fuel for cooking and organic fertiliser. Besides the health benefits of cooking with clean gas, the systems can save a family 35-45% of their household budget. However, due to the high upfront installation cost, this is not accessible to many smallholder farmers.

Through the capital raised via the Dutch social crowdfunding platform Lendahand, SimGas Kenya plans to extend loans to 170 farmers in Kenya towards the purchase of biogas systems. This will also give farmers access to organic fertiliser, which can be used on their land or sold to other farmers.

“Our mission is to empower people by offering them the tools to improve their lives and income position”, says Sanne Castro, CEO of SimGas.

This campaign is supported by UK Aid via Energy4Impact’s Crowd Power initiative. Through this programme, EUR 50 vouchers are made available to new lenders at Lendahand. There are only 200 vouchers available, which are distributed on first-come-first serve basis. If you are a new lender and are you interested in using a voucher, please send an email to info@lendahand.com.
